Not sure what size garage door you need? Here's a complete guide to standard sizes, how to measure your opening, and what to do if your garage is non-standard.

Choosing the right garage door size seems simple, but there are more variables than most people expect. Get it wrong and you're looking at costly modifications or a door that doesn't fit. This guide covers everything you need to know about standard sizes, how to measure correctly, and what to do if your opening is non-standard.

Standard Garage Door Sizes

  • Single car (1-car): 8 feet wide × 7 feet tall (most common), 9×7 (slightly wider, fits larger vehicles)
  • Double car (2-car): 16 feet wide × 7 feet tall (most common), 18×7 (extra wide)
  • Height options: 7 feet (standard), 8 feet (high-lift, for taller vehicles or SUVs), 9–10 feet (commercial/RV)
  • RV/oversized: 10×10, 12×12, or custom sizes for motorhomes and large trucks

How to Measure Your Garage Door Opening

Measure the rough opening — the width and height of the actual opening in the wall, not the existing door. Width: measure from the inside of the left jamb to the inside of the right jamb. Height: measure from the floor to the underside of the header. Also measure the headroom (space between the top of the opening and the ceiling) — you need at least 10–12 inches for standard hardware, 15+ inches for high-lift systems.

💡 Tip

Always measure in at least two places (top and bottom for width, left and right for height) — older homes often have openings that aren't perfectly square.

What If My Opening Is a Non-Standard Size?

Non-standard sizes (like 10×7, 14×7, or 15×7) are common in older homes and custom builds. In most cases, a door can be custom-ordered to fit your exact opening. Custom doors typically add $200–$600 to the cost and 2–4 weeks to the lead time. In some cases, it's more cost-effective to modify the opening to accept a standard-size door — a contractor can do this for $300–$800.

Choosing Between 7-Foot and 8-Foot Height

  • 7-foot height: Standard for most homes, fits cars, minivans, and most SUVs
  • 8-foot height: Recommended for lifted trucks, large SUVs (Suburban, Tahoe, Expedition), and vans
  • 8-foot doors require high-lift hardware and more headroom — confirm your ceiling height before ordering
  • The height upgrade typically adds $150–$300 to the door cost

Can I Replace My Door With a Different Size?

You can replace a door with the same size without any structural work. Going wider or taller requires modifying the rough opening, which involves framing work and may require a permit. Going smaller is possible but usually not recommended — it reduces usability and looks odd. If you're unsure, a professional measurement visit (which we offer free of charge) will give you exact options for your specific opening.
